How stump grinding actually works
Most stump complaints come from a surface grind — the visible part is gone but the roots are still right under the lawn. Below-grade is the difference between a yard you can sod and a yard that lumps back up after the next rain.
How it works
One trade, one truck, one machine — and a plant-able patch of dirt where a stump used to be.
Phone photo of the stump and the gate, plus the address. That gets you a same-day ballpark and a slot on the schedule.
Most jobs get a firm quote when I arrive — measured at ground level. The number on the spot is the number on the invoice.
Below-grade grind, surface roots traced, chips backfilled (or hauled — your call), walkways blown clean before I leave.
Practical specs
The most common reason a stump never gets ground is that the homeowner assumes the machine is too big. It usually isn’t.
Bottom line: if you can roll a wheelbarrow back there, the small machine almost certainly fits. Send a photo if you’re unsure — saves a wasted truck-roll.

Stumps go in as eyesores and come out as flat, plantable ground. The chips you see are what was left of the tree.

In their words
A few Houston-area homeowners who had a stump in the way of something — sod, a fence, a new tree, a smooth lawn.
Joel showed up on time, fit the grinder through a 36-inch gate I was sure was too narrow, ground a big water oak stump to dust, and was gone in two hours. The chips made nice mulch for the bed.

Had four old crepe myrtle stumps the previous tree guy left. Joel knocked all four out in one visit and gave me a multi-stump rate. Yard is finally smooth enough to mow without dodging.

After Hurricane season we had a snapped pecan that the tree crew left as a 30-inch stump. Joel came out, looked at it, gave me a fair number on the spot, and ground it well below grade so I could sod over the area in spring.

Call with the address and a phone photo of the stump and the gate. Most quotes happen on the spot — and most jobs land within the week.

Diameter at ground level, gate width if it’s in the back yard, and a phone photo if you’ve got one. That’s usually enough to give a number same-day.
